About Me
© Tom Mckean
My career in professional photography spans decades. During that period I went from being a freelance editorial photographer to shooting primarily for corporate and institutional clients. For fifteen of those years I was a co-owner of one of Philadelphia’s largest photography studios. In 1988 I became the executive director of ASMP, American Society of Media Photographers (www.asmp.org), a position I held for fifteen years.

In 2003 I returned to my roots as a photographer and began writing as well. I learned the ins and outs of digital photography technique, began to sell stock photographs, do assignments, and sell prints. I also have written four books and numerous articles for specialty magazines and websites.

My style is that of a documentary photographer, not a traditional commercial illustration photographer. I believe that good documentary photography makes people open their eyes and their minds. I try to make images that will hold a viewer’s attention for more than a few seconds.
